In
1948, George Oscar Bowen, together
with his wife Dorothy, founded
the Tulsa Boy Singers who performed
publicly for the first time in
the spring of 1949. Mr. Bowen
enjoyed a long and successful
career in musical education, retiring
from Tulsa Public Schools at the
age of 73. The Bowen's strong
commitment to choral music education
made the Tulsa Boy Singers a huge
success throughout Oklahoma.
George Bowen's former student,
Gene Roads, served as assistant director,
and after Mr. Bowen's death in
1957, became Artistic Director.
Mr. Roads directed TBS for the
next 40 years and many alumni
attribute their personal success
to the standards and principles
learned under his leadership.
Prior to his death, Gene Roads
began working with an assistant
director, Stephen Tappe. Mr. Tappe took over as Director at the time of Mr. Roads' death (1998) and served
in that position until May, 2004.
Today, under the direction of
Casey Cantwell, Tulsa Boy Singers
continues to reach new heights
of musical recognition. Mr. Cantwell
has led the choir in performances
throughout the United States and
Great Britain.
